SEA is pleased to Welcome Back to campus all students, faculty and staff for the Spring 2011 semester. To kick things off for the year SEA is bringing back an old favorite - Funny T's on Wednesday, Jan. 12 from 9am - 3pm, in the Activities Center area. A $1.00 charge will get your face plastered on a T-shirt in a picture of your own choosing. Make sure you check this event out - you'll be glad you did, if nothing else you can laugh at your friends as they have theirs done.

Cold chillin' with CyberDream.

Wednesday, Dec. 8, 2010 will be cold chillin' day as we celebrate the end of the semester with CyberDream. CyberDream is an innovative mind and body relaxing event that incorporates mind and body virtual reality. The event will take place in the cafeteria/Activities Center area from 10:00 am - 2:00 pm and of course it is totally FREE.

One of the most popular events SEA sponsors is back again as we will be sponsoring a Lazer Bowling Halloween party on Wednesday, Oct. 27 from 9:00 pm - Midnight at Emerson Bowling Lanes. Prices for evening are; $2.00 for students + 1 guest, $4.00 for everyone else, price includes shoe rental, bowling, and 1 large pizza and pitcher of pop per lane (6 people per lane minimum). The Great Pink Out.

SEA is proud to sponsor the Pink Out - a nationwide effort by the American Cancer Society to raise breast cancer awareness during the month of October. SEA will be giving out breast cancer info, pink cookies, and sponsoring a drawing with prizes - including a $50.00 Applebees card.

Join us for our annual FALL FEST. This is our 7th year for this annual event and it promises to be one of our best. STUDENTS, here's your first chance to see the newly formed, hard-working, give-it-all-ya-got, "good lookin' uniforms" Volleyball team. That's right, after opening the season with 2 long road trips to the University of Cincinnati Clermont (a Final Four team last year) and to Ashland University in northern Ohio, our team will finally get to make the long trek to here. This Monday at 6:00 pm our ladies will take the home floor for the first time. Plan to stick around and check them out - they really play and work hard. See you at the game.

Backdoor Comedy Club

SEA is proud to welcome back the ever popular Backdoor Comedy Club. The laughs will be nonstop beginning at 8:00 pm on Friday, Sept. 17, 2010. This semesters' club will feature; Adam Ace - who "combines phyical comedy, music, improvisation, props, stand up and audience interaction that takes crowds on a comedy adventure" and Michael Dean Ester - named one of the hottest comics of '09. Doors to the multi-purpose room in the College Activities Center open at 7:30 pm. SGA along with SEA is celebrating and honoring our men and women in the Armed Forces. We'll kick off the week with our annual cookout on Wednesday, Sept. 8 from 11:00 am - 12:30 pm behind the cafeteria. Come out, thank a vet, and have a burger or dog on us. On Thursday, Sept. 9, SEA is sponsoring a poster sale through Beyond the Wall poster sales. This will occur in the Activities Center from 10am - 6pm. Finally, on Friday, Sept. 10 we will host a tribute/memorial for 9/11. This event will begin at 9:00 am in front of the college - by the flag pole. Please plan to attend any and all of these events as we show our appreciation for those who provide us the freedom to do so.

Volleyball team set to kickoff season.

The new WVU Parkersburg Volleyball team is set to kickoff the 2010 season this Saturday, Sept. 4, 2010 in a Tri at the University of Cincinnati Clermont, Ohio State University Mansfield is the third team participating. Our Ladyhawks will take the floor for their first game at high noon against UC Clermont. The tourney will take place on the UC campus in Batavia, Ohio. Our first chance to see the team will be Oct. 17 when they host Ashland University. Native American Heritage Club

A new student organization is being formed at West Virginia University at Parkersburg for those students, faculty and staff interested exploring their Native American heritage. Interested parties contact Tim Beardsley (Pathfinder) by calling 424-8387 or by stopping in the Admissions and New Student Advising Center. Tim is Wyandotte, Delaware and Cherokee by lineage and has been given the native name of Pathfinder.
The mission of this club is to share information and history on Native peoples of the Mid-Ohio Valley as well as Native tribes of Ohio and West Virginia. We will organize over the summer with a goal of becoming an official student organization Fall 2010.
Fall Semester is now upon us and it is time to organize. Stop in the Student Welcome Center if you are curious or for more information.

Concert - Eden's Edge

SEA is proud to present in concert Eden's Edge. Edens Edge is a music trio from Nashville, TN. They are today's country with wings and roots. Originally based out of AR, Hannah Blaylock, Cherrill Green, and Dean Berner followed the music to Nashville in 2007. Since moving there, they signed a management deal and have been writing and recording a new album. The band is planning a schedule of live performances to begin in the spring and we are on their agenda.

Don't miss this can't miss trio, before you know it we might not be able to afford to bring them here.

If you’ve ever thought about studying abroad, attend “You and the World: Study Abroad Opportunities and Funding” on Monday, March 8 at 11:00 in Room 2211. Office for Global Initiatives coordinator Rebecca Phillips will share information about how to search for programs that catch your interest and, perhaps more importantly, how to locate funding for study abroad. She will also have information about a new WVU Parkersburg program starting May 2011—a month in Bulgaria, including time at a world-famous beach resort.

We'll kick off the month with an Open Mic session during the Student Engagement hour on March 3. Next up will be the U.S. Air Force “Band of Flight” on Saturday March 6 at 7:00pm. This concert is free and open to the public although all the seats have been taken. Batting third in our line up will be Spring Fever - A Concert for the Bulgaria Project featuring; Don Baker, Still Crazy and Union Valley. This concert will take place on Sunday, March 7 beginning at 2:00pm. Hitting 4th will be the Irish Rock band – Ceann (pronounced keen). They will perform Wednesday, March 10during student engagement hour – 11:00 am – 12:30 pm. Be sure to catch their special brand of rock and humor. Wrapping up the month will be another performance during Student Engagement hour on March 24. This time the band Eden’s Edge will provide the music. This trio of musicians will remind you of the band Nickel Creek –kinda bluegrassy/country/pop. Don’t miss this fantastic lineup of musicians because; March is Music Month.

WVU Parkersburg Riverhawks Win in Dramatic Fashion

With four seconds left on the game clock, Rodney Shawyer made a foul shot to put the Riverhawks ahead of the Hocking Tech Hawks, 68 to 67, after connecting on a desperate three point shot to tie the game.

The Riverhawks hosted their second home game of a weather plagued schedule last night (February 24) in the Multipurpose Room of the College Activities Center.

After a first half that saw Hocking build an 11 point lead, the Riverhawks fought their way back to a 50 – 50 tie on the perimeter shooting of Shawyer and Alex Treadwell.

As the game came to a close the teams traded leads until Hocking took a 3 point advantage from a foul shot with just 18 seconds left to play. Despite being closely guarded Shawyer managed to bury a three, causing him to be mobbed by his team mates after the foul had been called and earning a roar of approval from the crowd.

The Riverhawks play next in Wheeling, WV on February 27 in the rescheduled Mason Dixon Tournament against West Virginia Northern and Eastern Gateway.

Black History Month

In observance of Black History Month, the WVU Parkersburg Social Justice committee will be sponsoring this weeks Student Engagement hour event. "Simply Ira" will be playing on the stage in the new Student Union/cafeteria area. beginning at 11:00 am on Wednesday, Feb. 10.

Ira began playing music at an early age and was playing in bands by the time he was in high school. He has opened for such artists as The Edgar Winter Band and The Fabulous Thunderbirds.

Total, this series will entail 6 different presentations; 3 live speakers featuring our esteemed faculty and 3 nationally known video-presented speakers.

CHANGE OF PLANS In response to the horrific tragedy that befell Haiti we will now be working with the American Red Cross to raise money to benefit relief efforts. Our "Day On", will now be spent at the Grand Central Mall manning a booth taking donations. We will begin at 10 am and run three shifts, 10am - 1pm, 1pm - 5pm and 5pm - 9pm. Please try to join us for 1 or all of these shifts. We will meet at the food court at 9:45am on Monday.

The Voices of Triumph Gospel Community Choir (Voices) of the Mid Ohio Valley in partnership with WVU Parkersburg is sponsoring a workshop entitled "Removing the Confusion of Gospel Music". The workshop will be held Saturday Nov. 14, 2009 from 9 am - 12 pm at the college.

The workshop is open to anyone interested in the actual history of gospel music, diction, articulation, intonation, range, dynamics and a call and response selection. It will also help to nuture your spirituality.

The WVU at Parkersburg Student Government Association is proud to present "The Invisible Children", a documentary film and event on the ravages of war in Northern Uganda. This event will occur on November 3, 2009 beginning at 7:00 pm in the Multi-Purpose room. The event is free and open to the public and of course ALL students, faculty and staff are welcome. In the spring of 2003, three young filmmakers traveled to Africa in search of a story. What started out as a filmmaking adventure transformed into much more when these boys from Southern California discovered a tragedy that disgusted and inspired them, a tragedy where children are both the weapons and the victims.
After returning to the States, they created the documentary "Invisible Children: Rough Cut," a film that exposes the tragic realities of northern Uganda.s night commuters and child soldiers.
The film was originally shown to friends and family, but has now been seen by millions of people. The overwhelming response has been, "How can I help?" To answer this question, the non-profit Invisible Children, Inc. was created, giving compassionate individuals an effective way to respond to the situation.

Who We Are
We are storytellers. We are visionaries, humanitarians, artists, and entrepreneurs. We are individuals part of a generation eager for change and willing to pursue it.
As a non-profit we work to transform apathy into activism. By documenting the lives of those living in regions of conflict and injustice, we hope to educate and inspire individuals in the Western world to use their unique voice for change. Our media creates an opportunity for people to become part of a grassroots movement that intelligently responds to what.s happening in the world.
But our work extends beyond our borders. In war-affected regions we focus on long-term development, working directly with individuals and institutions that are eager to realize their full potential. Through education and innovative economic opportunities, we partner with affected communities and strive to improve the quality of life for individuals living in conflict and post-conflict regions.

How We Make a Difference
Our approach to humanitarian work is founded in the strength and intelligence of the Ugandan community. We learned early on it was not only important but essential to heed the wisdom of people that had not only lived in the war, but were surviving it. People who would know better than anyone what the greatest needs were and the best ways to meet them. What we came to find is that while there have been many efforts to address the issues that stem from living and fighting in such a long-lasting war, the people of Uganda are asking for a future beyond the conflict.
Their pleas have become our development strategy.
All of our programming is a partnership between those of us at Invisible Children and those in the Ugandan community. We focus on long-term goals that enable children to take responsibility for their future and the future of their country. Our programs are carefully researched and developed initiatives that address the need for quality education, mentorships, the redevelopment of schools, resettlement from the camps, and financial stability.

The Black Hare Renaissance FaireThe Black Hare Renaissance Faire is a first year faire located in Jackson County, West Virginia. It is being sponsored by Carbon 12, a local 4-H group dedicated to promoting theatrical arts. The masterminds behind the fair are a group of like-minded individuals that include Carbon12 , faculty and students of West Virginia University at Parkersburg, staff from local public schools, and regional branches of the Society for Creative Anachronism. The scholars associated with this project will be drawn from the aforementioned groups, as well as incorporating expert craftsman and artisans. This is our second year for the faire. Our events will span one day again this year but interest is growing. However this one day will have a continuous stream of activity. We plan to have multiple events going on simultaneously in order for our attendees to have various options in what they wish to experience. We have finalized several events in the categories of live entertainment, combat, food, artisans, historical reenactments, and children’s activities.

Daytime field trip planned.

Interested students, faculty, and staff (plus your friends and relatives) are invited to participate in a college-sponsored daytime field trip to the Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine on Friday, May 1. A portion of the transportation cost (via school bus owned by Parkersburg Catholic High School) will be covered by the Social Justice Committee. The charge to reserve a seat on the bus will be only $10 per person. Upon arrival in Beckley, each traveler will pay for his or her own lunch at a fast food restaurant and will be required to pay for his or her tour ticket, at the group rate of $14 each (adults 18 and over).
The tour ticket will include a ride through an authentic 1800s coal mine (1,500 feet beneath the surface) and a guided tour of the restored coal camp that features a church, museum, miner's cottage, country school, and a superintendent's residence. Also included will be a guided tour of the Mountain Homestead, which is part of The Youth Museum of Southern West Virginia. The group will have the opportunity to visit the coal museum, gift shop and fudgery before leaving the grounds.
The bus will depart WVU at Parkersburg at 8:45 a.m. on Friday, May 1, and will pick up passengers at the Jackson County Center at 9:30 a.m. It is estimated that the group will return by about 5:15 p.m. at the Jackson County Center and by about 6:00 p.m. at the Parkersburg campus.

Charity Basketball game.

A team of WVU Parkersburg faculty/staff will be participating in a charity basketball game on Thursday April 2 at The Snyder Center on the campus of Ohio Valley University. Results Radio, the United States Marine Corps, a team of faculty/staff from OVU and our team will comprise the field. Games begin at 6pm and last approximately 30-45 minutes each and are fun in nature.

Admission is free but donations will be accepted at the door. Proceeds will benefit the local Multiple Sclerosis foundation.

Plan to come out and enjoy an evening of fun and cheer on/laugh at/or simply enjoy your favorite professor as they play a little round-ball.

"Neuman's Theory: Then and Now"

WVU at Parkersburg is honored to host Dr. Betty Neuman, nursing theorist, for a lecture, "Neuman's Theory: Then and Now," at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, March 25, 2009, in the theatre.

The goal of Neuman's Theory is to provide a wholistic overview of the physiological, psychological, sociocultural, and developmental aspects of human beings. Faculty and students in the areas of health sciences and psychology will find this lecture particularly interesting. Neuman is an RN who received a BS in Nursing and a Masters in Mental Health, Public Health Consultation from UCLA, and a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Pacific Western University. She developed the Neuman Systems Model in 1970 at the University of California, Los Angeles.

This distinguished lecture is being co-sponsored by WVU at Parkersburg and the Counseling and Wellness Center, PLLC, in observance of Women's History Month.

Student Government is hosting a Bloodmobile during Student Engagement hour, Wednesday Feb. 4th from 8am - 2pm in the Multi-Purpose room. All donors are needed and will receive the warm fuzzies from helping your fellow man, a Recycle Life Water Bottle, compliments of the American Red Cross as well as being enter into prize giveaways from Student Government. Prizes include, movie passes, thumb drives, and free lunches in the cafeteria. All donors need to bring a picture ID.

The WVUP Speech/Forensics Team is seeking a few good members. If you like the thrill of competition, travel and just plain fun then this is the organization for you, as an added bonus you may also receive college credit. The Speech Team has traditionally been a powerhouse in state competitions, but now, is in dire need of members just to stay alive - without a few new members the program WILL be discontinued. College Theatre Production

Watch Out for THE FOX. West Virginia University at Parkersburg Theatre Department's production of Allan Miller's adaptation of D.H. Lawrence's controversial novella will be performed in the college theatre on January 16, 17 and 18. It is free and open to the public.

Join the WVUP Staff Council on Nov. 19, 2008 for their 20th annual American Sampler Craft Show. This event will last from 8 a.m. - 6:30 p.m. in the Multi-Purpose room and will feature dozens of crafters, raffles & prizes, plus a bodacious bake sale and wonderful white elephant sale. This is a great opportunity for students, faculty and staff to purchase those early Christmas presents. 3-D Art Department Pottery Sale

The 3-D Art Department will be hosting their annual Pottery sale on Dec 1 and 2, from 9 a.m. - 6 p.m. outside the WVUP Library. In conjunction with the pottery sale you may also pick up some great baked goods or even some soup as both of these will be on sale also.
All art work is by students and faculty. Proceeds will go to the 3-D Art Department for future equipment.
Bake sale proceeds will go to future guest artists/lectures and field trips.
